HL7 Interoperability: What Laboratories Actually Need to Know

AddisNova Health IT Team July 27, 2026

HL7 compliance often gets treated as a single checkbox — either a system supports it or it doesn't. In practice, interoperability is a spectrum, and the details matter enormously for a working lab integration.

Analyzer-to-LIS interfaces need to handle partial results, corrected results, and out-of-sequence delivery gracefully. Hospital system integrations need to map local code sets to standard terminologies without silently dropping data the receiving system doesn't recognize. And every interface needs a monitoring layer that flags failed or delayed messages before a physician notices a missing result — not after.

The technical standard is table stakes. The operational discipline around it is what actually keeps results moving reliably.
